Gibson scores Salem’s goal

WESTLAKE –Fifth-seeded Westlake knocked off Salem, 9-1, in a Division III sectional final Saturday at Read Stadium.

Westlake took a 5-0 lead in the first half.

Troy Gibson scored Salem’s goal off a free kick. Colin Riesen made 15 saves in goal.

Salem ends the season with a record of 8-10-1.

Westlake (14-2-1) will host 19th-seeded Olmsted Falls at 7 p.m. Thursday.

West Branch 5, Elyria Catholic 4, SO

BELOIT — No. 14-seeded West Branch was perfect in shootout kicks to outlast No. 17-seeded Elyria Catholic, 5-4, in a Division IV sectional final Saturday.

Elyria Catholic missed the first and fifth attempts, while West Branch’s Trey Thomas,Gavin Clemens, Xander Culbertson and Reed Martucci scored to lift the Warriors.

West Branch (11-3-3) advances to play at Andrews Osborne –the defending Division III state champion — at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Willoughby. The game time was changed from 7 p.m. because the Phoenix do not have lights.

Saturday’s match was tied 4-4 at the end of regulation and neither team could not score in the two overtime periods.

West Branch’s Xander Culberton scored twice in the opening 20:20 before Elyria Catholic tied the score at 2-2 only 16 seconds left in the first half.

Noah Dean scored off a corner kick by Reed Martucci to put West Branch ahead 3-2 with 36:11 remaining in the second half. Elyria Catholic tied the match only four minutes later.

Gavin Clemens gave West Branch a 4-3 lead, but Elyria Catholic tied it up again with 24:32 left in regulation.
