Calls kept Salem Fire Dept. busy in ‘24
SALEM — The Salem Fire Department has completed its annual activity report for 2024.
According to the report, the department responded to 2,354 incidents in 2024, with the majority of incidents being EMS calls at 1,567 (roughly 66%), which included 62 motor vehicle accidents and seven vehicle versus pedestrian crashes. Service calls were the second most common incident type in 2024 with 359 calls, followed by hazardous material/condition calls (135), false alarms (130), good intent calls (93), fires (67), and severe weather and citizen complaints (three).
The department transported a patient with its ambulance 113 times, generating $75,017.32 from medical billing.
Roughly half of all the department’s fire calls were structure fires in 2024, responding to 34 in total, of which 33 were building fires and one was a fire in a structure other than a building.
Cooking fires contained to their container, and external rubbish, trash or waste fires were tied for the second most common type of fire with six incidents each, followed passenger vehicle fires (five), brush fires (four), grass fires (three), dumpster or exterior trash receptacle fires (three), and freight or transport vehicle, and rail vehicle fires with one incident each.
The department provided mutual aid more often than it received it last year, offering aid 23 times and receiving aid seven times in 2024.
The department’s average response time was 4.22 minutes, and it completed 288 inspections in 2024, generating $49,508.90 in fees and grant funding.
The department’s personnel also continued to sharpen and expand their skills last year, completing 3,148.8 training hours.
