Columbiana eyes grant for stadium upgrades

COLUMBIANA — City and school officials are counting on their constituents to use their social media prowess to help them score a multi-million dollar grant from T-Mobile for stadium upgrades.

Bryce Miner, Columbiana city deputy administrator, said that he has assisted Columbiana High School with their grant application for the T-Mobile Friday Night 5G Lights grant, where one participating school can receive the ultimate tech upgrade for up to $2 million.

According to the page on T-Mobile’s website, more than a thousand high schools have applied.

The key to making the top 16, which will be announced Oct. 10, is strategic marketing, he explained.

“We encourage everyone to show their school and community spirit by posting on Instagram every day until the finalists are revealed. To help Columbiana win, post on Instagram for Columbiana and tag the official handles @columbianaschools–clippers and @tmobile along with the hashtags #Sweepstakes and #FN5GL in the post,” Miner added.

If Columbiana is selected as a finalist, the district is guaranteed a minimum of $25,000 for their project with the $2 million going to the top school district.

So what is on Columbiana’s wish (or, in some cases, need) list?

According to District Superintendent Don Mook, their Fisher Stadium, which is located within the city’s Firestone Park, needs paving and sidewalk work. Officials also want to extend the football field, so they can accommodate soccer. Putting new restrooms and a new concession stand also are on the to-do list along with revamping the sprinkler system.

Much of this is dependent on the city fixing a problematic sewer line, Mook concluded.

According to Summer Barker, lead architect on the stadium project, the committee has indicated it will cost $2.5 million to finish all the stadium upgrades.

Starting at $2.99/week.
