Former state fire marshal elected Toledo mayor

AP
POSTED: November 4, 2009
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A former state fire marshal will be the next mayor in Toledo.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting unofficial results, independent candidate Mike Bell got 52 percent of the votes, and Democrat Keith Wilkowski got 48 percent.

The two rivals grew up near each other, went to the same high school and graduated together.

Bell was a fire chief in Toledo for 17 years before Gov. Ted Strickland selected him to be the state fire marshal two years ago.

He grew up in the state’s fourth largest city and played football at the University of Toledo.

Bell, 54, is a registered Democrat but ran as an independent because he says he didn’t want to be saddled with political obligations.

He’ll replace three-term Mayor Carty Finkbeiner who decided not to seek re-election.
