DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Unofficial returns show independent challenger Gary Leitzell unseating Rhine McLin as mayor of Dayton by 878 votes.
With all 151 precincts reporting, Leitzell had 51.5 percent, or 14,923 votes, to McLin’s 48.5 percent, or 14,045 votes.
The 48-year-old Leitzell, chairman of a Dayton neighborhood council, says the southwest Ohio city of 154,000 residents needs change.
Leitzell has worked in retail, sold insurance and rehabbed houses. He says he brings innovative thinking and business savvy. He says the city can cut its projected budget deficit by selling unneeded properties and organizing events to attract out-of-state patrons.
McLin, 61, is a former Ohio state legislator who was elected as the first female mayor of Dayton in 2001 and was seeking her third term.
