Special Salem Council meeting planned
SALEM - A special meeting of Salem City Council has been set for 6 p.m. Wednesday in council chambers at city hall to discuss and consider approval of four union contracts for city workers.
The unions represent police officers, firefighters, utility workers and service department workers. The last contracts expired June 30, so representatives from each union have been in negotiations recently with the city administration.
Salem Marching Band Camp continues
SALEM - The Salem High School Marching Band Camp continues from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays through Aug. 15 in the high school band room.
Salem Preservation Society to meet
SALEM The public is invited to the Salem Preservation Society's meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Ruth Smucker House on South Broadway Avenue.
Food distribution to be held Friday
SALEM - The Second Harvest Food Bank distribution will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church, 15096 W. Middletown Road. Attendees are to bring containers.
Splash Down set Friday in East Liverpool
EAST LIVERPOOL - Ohio Valley College of Technology is hosting Splash Down, a free community event, from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday at Thomson Park. The event offers swimming, food, games and raffles.
Tullis reunion planned Saturday
SALEM - Descendants of James and Roxanne Tullis will hold their annual reunion at noon Saturday in Pavilion 1 of Centennial Park. Those attending are asked to bring up to four items for the 1 p.m. white elephant auction. Dinner will be served at 4 p.m., and table service will be provided.

Bids taken, tickets sold for baskets Saturday
SALEM - Due to the rain at the annual Salem Kiwanis Club's Antique Show, tickets will be sold and bids taken for over 60 baskets from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Manhattan Cleaners, 763 E. State St. Winners will be drawn at 8 p.m.
Breakfast offered at North Benton church
NORTH BENTON - An all-you-can-eat breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 9 at North Benton Presbyterian Church. Cost is $6.50 for adults and $3.50 for ages 6 to 12.
Dickey reunion to be held Sunday
NEGLEY - The 81st annual Aaron Dickey reunion will be held Sunday at Lake Tomahawk. Those attending are to bring a coverdish for the meal to be served at 1 p.m.

Beaver Local Athletic HOF inductees
LISBON - The Beaver Local Athletic Hall of Fame has announced its 2014 inductees: Joe Linkesh (1989), Stephen Mercer (2005), Shawn Dunn (2005), Brad White (1998), Sarah Pilarcik Lowe (2000), and in the Special Category, Wilbur Staley.
The induction ceremonies begin at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Columbiana County Career Center. A buffet dinner will be served. Cost is $20. United offers 'Ready for Kindergarten' class
HANOVERTON - United Elementary School is inviting children to join its "Get Ready for Kindergarten" class. In this week-long class, the children will prepare for kindergarten by enjoying games, songs, stories, crafts and becoming used to the school routine. Chamber to hold networking breakfast
SALEM - The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a "Networking Before Nine" breakfast on Aug. 20 at the Salem Community Center. Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. with a continental breakfast and table networking from 8 to 9 a.m. Cost is $15 for chamber members and $20 for guests and potential chamber members. Car show/cancer benefit planned
NORTH LIMA - Mr. Darby's Antique and Collectible Emporium and Pizza Joe's in North Lima are sponsoring a car show/cancer benefit for Debbie Grover from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 17 at the corner of Market Street and South Avenue Extension. The car entry fee is $5. There will be door prizes, a 50/50 and Chinese auction. Dash plaques will be given to the first 50 registered entries.
Grover is currently battling stage four cervical cancer, with ongoing treatment and mounting medical bills. She is a home health care nurse who has taken care of others for over 25 years.

United schedules student registration
HANOVERTON- United Local Schools will hold new student registration for the 2014-2015 school year on Aug. 12 and 13. Appointment times will be from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. and can be made with the junior/senior high school or elementary when picking up the new student registration packet. Packets can be picked up in the administration office beginning today and appointments can be made at that time or via telephone. Children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1 are eligible to attend kindergarten. When registering a child, parents must bring their child's birth certificate, social security number, immunization records, two proofs of residency and any custody documents, if applicable.
