Calla Community Church to mark 150th
CANFIELD - Calla Community Church at 6482 W. Calla Road is celebrating its 150th anniversary. The Rev. James Houston is the pastor and Ralph Wince is the associate minister.
The church had its first organized meeting in June 1864 in the schoolhouse at Loveland Station. Services were conducted by the Rev. J. D. Hollinger. By October 1864, there were 14 members at the services.
L. Templin and Sons Seed Company played an important part in the development of Calla. The original Templin home still stands next to the church. During the heyday of the seed company, the post office in Calla moved more mail than Columbus or Cleveland. This was due to the mailing of the Templin Seed Company.
J. Paulin and T.L. Knauf were active in the creation of the church, which was formerly known as Mt. Zion Evangelical Church. Direct descendants of both these families still attend Sunday services on a regular basis. Over the years, the church left the Evangelical mission. The name by then was Calla Church.
The historical company is asking for help in finding information and pictures from over the years which may be forwarded to Karen Hazen at 330-533-5478 or the church at 330-533-6007. On Oct. 12, the church will hold a rededication and a display from the past.
