WARREN - Joseph Edward Birchak, 86, of Warren, Ohio, formerly of Salem, Ohio, died at 9 p.m. on July 24, 2014 at Hospice House in Poland, Ohio with his family by his side.
He was born Sept. 1, 1927, son of the late George and Anna (Majiros) Birchak.
He was a Goshen High School graduate and a graduate of the Reppert School of Auctioneering in Decatur, Ind. Before retiring April 19, 1993, he had been employed for 42 years at Heckett Engineering in Warren as a crane operator. He was a member of the Christ Our King and Saints Cyril and Methodius Churches in Warren, the Knights of Columbus in Warren, the Slovak Club in Salem, and the American Legion in Lake Milton. He was a Maintenance and Operations Consultant for the Olde Dutch Mill Golf Course in Lake Milton.
Mr. Birchak served as a sergeant with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
His wife, Mary (Mozina) Birchak, whom he married June 27, 1954, survives him along with three sons, Michael (Carol) Birchak of Cincinnati, Ohio, Daniel Birchak of Phoenix, Arizona, and Ronald (Cortney) Birchak of Lake Milton; a daughter, Susan (Gary) Booth of Champion, Ohio; a sister, Margaret von Tuchlinski of Salem, Ohio; grandchildren, Michelle King, Joseph, John, James, Carly, Matthew, Gabriel and Bo Birchak, and Zachary and Mackenzie Booth.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at the St. Paul Catholic Church, 935 East State Street, Salem with Father Robert Edwards officiating. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 29 at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home, 1014 East State Street, Salem. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery in Salem with military honors provided by the Salem Honor Guard.
