Salineville-Southern Local Hall of Fame class named
SALINEVILLE - The Salineville-Southern Local Hall of Fame announces the Class of 2014: Amy Barlis, Class of 1987 (Athlete); Scott Crawford, Class of 1994 (Athlete); John Ewing (Contributor); Nate Jones, Class of 2004 (Athlete); Matt Leffler, Class of 1990 (Athlete).
Inductions will be held Oct. 4.
Wingett, Long earn dean's list at Miami University
OXFORD - Miami University students who ranked in the top 20 percent of undergraduate students within each division for second semester 2013-14 have been named to the dean's list recognizing academic performance.
Area residents on the list include Andrea Wingett of Beloit and Drake Long of Salem.
Samu achieves president's list at Miami University
OXFORD - Jocelynne Samu of Beloit was named to the Miami University spring 2014 president's list.
Miami University students who are ranked in the top three percent of undergraduate students within each division for second semester 2013-14 have been named to the president's list recognizing academic excellence.
Weingart finishes first in Butler piano competition
MUNCIE, Ind. - Carson Weingart, a senior at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., recently won first place in the 2014 Hoosier State piano competition held at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Earlier this spring, Weingart took top honors in the in the regional competition in a field of 18 pianists, which qualified him for the state competition. The regional competition was held at Anderson University in Indiana.
The state competition featured the top winners from 12 regions in Indiana. The competition is sponsored by the Indiana Music Teachers Association. As first-place winner, Weingart has been invited to perform at the Indiana State teachers' convention in November of 2014.
Earlier this year, Weingart won the first place in solo piano competition for the state of Indiana in the Music Teachers National Association and qualified to compete in regional competition at Baldwin Wallace University. At Ball State University, Weingart is a double major in piano performance and business.
He is a 2010 graduate of West Branch High School and the son of Scott and Shelley Weingart of Salem.
Local students participate in MEDCAMP program
ROOTSTOWN - Fifty middle school students attended and successfully completed the MEDCAMP program at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) July 17-19. Middle school students from across Northeast Ohio applied to take part in this three-day program.
Now in its 24th year, MEDCAMP is designed to stimulate students' interests in the basic sciences related to medicine and pharmacy, and to expose them to career opportunities in those fields.
Local students who participated included:
Alyssa Chestnut of Lisbon, a student at Lisbon Exempted Village School; Eva DeRuyter of Lisbon, a student at Lisbon David Anderson High School; and Marisa McDonough of Columbiana, a student at Southside Middle School.
Zehentbauer named to dean's list at Waynesburg
WAYNESBURG, Pa. - Emily A. Zehentbauer of Hanoverton has been named to the dean's list at Waynesburg University for the spring term 2014. Zehentbauer is pursuing a bachelor's of science degree in biology (pre-dental/medical/veterinary).
She is a graduate of United High School.
ACH?Auxiliary awards Thomas Scholarship to trio of students
ALLIANCE - The Alliance Community Hospital Auxiliary recently awarded three area seniors the Dr. James J. Thomas Scholarship.
This $1,500 scholarship is awarded annually to three recipients who are interested in entering the medical field. The winners are Kristen Gobley of Alliance, Joshua Paulo-Reyes of St. Thomas Aquinas and Alexandrea Garrett of West Branch.
The auxiliary scholarship fund was created in 1987 to provide financial assistance to students entering the healthcare field. The fund was named for the late Dr. James J. Thomas, who was a retired hospital anesthesiologist who upon retirement became a hospital volunteer. His donation funded the beginning of the scholarship fund and has been added to over the years by fundraising done by the auxiliary. The 2014 scholarship committee consisted of chairperson Mary Lou Williams, Eleanor Carver, Lois Thompson, and Nancy Freconna.
