Trek re-created

July 19, 2014
Salem News

Mormon youth from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Youngstown Stake gained a greater appreciation for the early Mormon pioneers by participating in a handcart trek July 10-12. The youth pulled handcarts to experience what it might have been like for the pioneers who migrated by handcart to the Salt Lake Valley, Utah, 1856 to 1860. The group of about 65 youth and leaders began their trek Thursday at the Pymatuning State Park dam in Jamestown, Pa., and walked nearly 20 miles before reaching camp in Ashtabula County on Saturday. Pictured pulling the handcart are Jonathan Wagley of Alliance and Levi Dew of Lisbon. (Submitted photo)
