Guilford Lake Civic Association picnic set
GUILFORD LAKE - The public is invited to the annual Guilford Lake Civic Association's coverdish picnic at 4 p.m. July 20 at the State Park Pavilion on Teegarden Road, north side of lake. Trophies and prizes from the July 4th boat parade will be awarded and there will be a demonstration on the new paddling board craze by Lauren Borden and her husband of Bona Fortuna Boards (facebook.com/bonafortunaboards). Hot dogs, table service and beverages will be provided.

Taxes topic at Chamber lunch program
SALEM - The Legislative Affairs Committee of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will host a luncheon program at noon on July 30 at the Salem Community Center. Daniel Navin, assistant vice president of Tax and Economic Policy at the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, will present, "What State and Local Taxes Should and Can be Reformed?" Shoe-Fly-By shoe drive set Aug. 3
SALEM - The Salem High School Class of 2016's fundraiser, Shoe-Fly-By, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 3 at Family Video. People are asked to drive in and classmates will take the shoes from your car. Proceeds from the shoe drive will help fund prom and after prom. The shoes will be given to third world countries. The goal is to collect 15,000 pairs of shoes.
'Salem's Got Talent' fundraiser planned
SALEM -"Salem's Got Talent," set for 5:30 p.m. Aug. 30, is a fundraiser to benefit the Salem Memorial Building and the many programs and services it provides. Separate acts will perform for five to 10 minutes on the gym stage at the Memorial Building and will then be judged by the audience.
The fans will vote in the form of a monetary donation which will go to the Salem Memorial Building Association. The contestant(s) with the most votes will be crowned champion.
Tickets to the event are $20 and include a buffet dinner from Catered Affair consisting of a stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, vegetable, pasta, salad, rolls, dessert and drink.

ArtFest set Sept. 27 at Mount Union
ALLIANCE - The University of Mount Union and the Alliance Chamber of Commerce will celebrate the 50th annual ArtFest from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 27 at Mount Union by the campus lakes.
This year, ArtFest will include two main categories: fine art and functional craft. The ArtFest committee is looking for fine art in the traditional and modern media (painting, ceramics, printmaking, photography, etc.) and functional craft that has a specific utility yet it is creative either in its purpose or aesthetic appearance (soaps, candles, lights, tables, purses, mirrors, etc.). The event will feature artwork that is both on display and for sale.
Booth rental fees will be waived for 2014 to vendors who register for ArtFest at mountunion.edu/artfest-registration. The event will also provide local musical entertainment, live demonstrations of artists at work and a children's gallery.

Soul to Sole Fun Run planned Saturday
LISBON - The Soul to Sole Fun Run begins at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Columbiana County Fairgrounds. Registration runs from 2 to 5 p.m. The children's one mile run starts at 4:45 p.m. followed by the 5K fun run at 5 p.m.
At 7 p.m. a free concert will be presented by Zach Paxson and Company. A free will offering will be accepted or concert goers may bring a donation of toiletries, soap, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, or paper products for the food pantry of the Lisbon First United Methodist Church.
Other activities include a drum, Tae Kwon Do and Zumba demonstrations and games. Finisher medals will be awarded to all who finish the race along with awards for specific age categories. An overall race trophy will be awarded.
Food will be available for purchase including fresh fruit and veggies, frozen fruit pops, chicken wraps, cookies, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, salads and beverages.
