East Palestine July 4th activities announced
EAST PALESTINE Activities have been announced at East Palestine Park on July 4.
Breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. at the community center. Park Board activities start with the pet parade at 10 a.m., bike parade at 12:30 p.m., games for all ages at 2 p.m. and a basketball free throw contest at 5 p.m.
East Palestine Alumni and Friends will host its annual duck derby contest at 4 p.m. at the entrance of the park. A volleyball tournament kicks off at 4 p.m. To register a team call Zac Dunn at 330-853-4990 or Nate Sugar at 506-8122. Teams will consist of five players at $25 per team. Teams may also register beginning at 3:30 p.m. July 4.
Live music starts with Anthony Monteleone at 2:30 p.m., Ben Flint at 3:30 p.m., Sparo and Marlene Figley at 5 p.m., Passin' Thru at 6 p.m. and Chub Scouts at 8 p.m. Sounds by Lucian Clewell play throughout the day.
There will be concession stands in the park plus Savvy J's Snack concessions at the pool. Fireworks conclude the evening sponsored by the East Palestine Fire Department.
Benefit square dance planned at church
BEAVER TOWNSHIP - A benefit square dance will be held from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. July 5 at Paradise Church, 10020 New Buffalo Road.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Proceeds from the dance and basket raffle will be directed to the donor of the kidney to Neil Maxwell.
Gavin Ward Memorial Run/Walk is Aug. 8
HANOVERTON - The second annual Gavin Ward Memorial Run/Walk 5K night run kicks off at 7:15 p.m. Aug. 8 at United High School.
Registration will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Cost is $20 to all runners registered by July 30. Each runner registered by that time is also guaranteed a dry fit race shirt. Registration is $25 the night of the race.
All funds and proceeds benefit the Gavin D. Ward Memorial Scholarship at the high school. Ward, the late son of Mike and Denise Ward of Salem, died of an asthma attack after a football practice before entering the seventh grade. There will be a DJ, fruit, water and awards after the race and a raffle during and after the race.
Among the prizes are an overnight stay for two at the Spread Eagle, a Walmart $50 gift card, a $25 gift card from Giant Eagle.
Two-day garage sale will aid Camp Grief
SALEM - A charity garage sale to benefit Camp Good Grief in Rogers, a children's grief camp, will be held from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, in memory of Glenn Peison and Olivia Thompson.
The public is invited to the sale at the home of Dena Peison, 1097 Jones Drive. Monetary donations to Camp Good Grief, will be accepted by phone at 330-337-0940 or in person the days of the sale.
Pistol training offered in West Middlesex
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. - The Mercer County Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) will teach a basic pistol training and conceal carry course on Saturday and Sunday at Hidden Valley Sportsmen's Club in West Middlesex, Pa. The deadline for registration is June 25.
The course will follow National Rifle Association basic pistol training guidelines. A certificate will be given to individuals who complete the course.
The Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, Ashtabula and Portage County (Ohio) sheriff's offices will accept the certification with CCW applications for Ohio residents living in those counties since the course meets the Ohio concealed carry requirements. All proceeds benefit the Mercer County CIRT.
Training will cover: pistol and ammunition knowledge, safe gun handling, shooting fundamentals, marksmanship and live fire drills.
About Mercer County CIRT: Established in 2005, the Mercer County Critical Incident Response Team is a multi-jurisdictional organization comprised of officers from eight police agencies.
These officers receive training above the normal police training to respond to high risk warrants, terrorist events, barricaded subjects, hostage rescue, hazardous material incidents, dignitary protection and large scale disasters.
