SALEM - Curtis C. Harris, Jr., 83, of Salem, died at 6 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014 at the Courtyard at Lexington in Salem.
He was born Aug. 6, 1930 in Cape May, New Jersey, a son of the late Curtis Sr. and Jennie (Reeves) Harris.
Curtis graduated from Harvard University with a PhD in economics. He worked at the University of Maryland for 25 years where he taught economics and did research before retiring in 1992. He was also the author of numerous books in his specialty of regional and urban economics.
He moved here from Vero Beach, Florida area where he had resided for 20 years and was a Salem area resident for two years. Mr. Harris was a member of both the First United Methodist Church in Vero Beach, Florida and Salem United Methodist Church and served in the Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Harris was a devout Bible scholar, who enjoyed building elaborate large scale model railroads and was an avid fan of Walt Disney World.
His first wife, Mary (Will) Harris preceded him in death on Oct. 20, 1976. A daughter, Kathleen Solos also preceded him in death in March of 2012.
His wife, Martha (Meyers Costal) Harris, whom he married Dec. 26, 1990, survives him along with children, Curtis (Julia) Harris of Vero Beach, Florida, Geoffrey (Sandie) Harris of Baltimore, Maryland, Jan (Michael) Penn of Myersville, Maryland, David (Sherry) Costal of Edinburg, Pennsylvania, Richard (Leslie) Costal of Salem, Ohio, Linda Costal of New Castle, Pennsylvania, and Sandra Coe of New Middletown, Ohio; two sisters, Jeanette Harris and Helen (Jack) Sayre, all of Cape May, New Jersey; a brother, Harry (Karen) Harris of Port St. Lucie, Florida; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. Don Monaco officiating. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday prior to the service.
The family wishes to thank the staff members of the Courtyard at Lexington for their loving care given to Curtis.
