Wound Healing Center participating
SALEM - The Wound Healing Center at Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC) is participating in the first Healogics National Wound Care Awareness Week which began Monday and ends Friday.
Chronic wounds affect millions of people in the U.S. and the incidence is rising, fueled by an aging population and increasing rates of diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and the late effects of radiation therapy. Untreated, chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation of the affected limb.
SRMC's Wound Healing Center offers advanced therapies to patients suffering from chronic wounds. The center has achieved national recognition in earning the Healogics 2013 Center of Excellence Award, and is one of only seven wound healing facilities in Ohio to receive this award for performance excellence.
During Healogics National Wound Care Awareness Week, Erica Stacy, R.N., the Wound Healing Center's program director, will be visiting local physician offices to provide education to help staff identify patients that may benefit from advanced wound care.
"There are many patients living with non-healing wounds who are unaware of treatments available in their communities," said Stacy. "Our team of specially-trained physicians and staff administers state-of-the-art wound healing treatments that are available locally to our patients. For example, one of the advanced treatments provided at the WHC is hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which promotes healing by increasing the amount of oxygen delivered to damaged tissues. Last year, the WHC provided over 800 treatments using this method."
People with wounds that have not improved with traditional methods of treatment in four weeks may benefit from a visit to the center.
