Volunteer tourism promotors in Salem, Hanoverton and Lisbon plan to spend today getting tour operators and travel agents familiar with the Golden Triangle of Columbiana County.
Known as the Golden Triangle Motor Coach Sampler Fam Tour, the trip taking off from the Das Dutch Haus parking lot in Columbiana this morning will hit key attractions featured in the various tours offered throughout the year by the Golden Triangle group.
According to a description of the Golden Triangle by Salem resident David Schwartz, Salem, Lisbon and Hanoverton make up the triangle. Volunteers got together a few years ago and started talking about ways to promote their areas.
"Conveniently located equidistantly just 10 miles from one another, the three communities provide a refreshing change from the usual. Each town of the triangle offers unique and eye-appealing attractions for today's savvy travelers. You can do things artistic, historic, culinary and everything in between at the exciting attractions that await you in the Golden Triangle towns of Columbiana County, Ohio," he wrote.
Stops along the fam tour will cover more than just those three towns, with communities throughout the county included with at least 16 one-day tours available throughout the year covering a variety of themes.
The sampler fam begins in Lisbon with stops at the Lisbon Historical Society and the old-fashioned Bye & Bye Hardware, then travels to the East Liverpool area for tours of the C.C. Thompson House where pottery baron C.C. Thompson lived and the Sturgis House, a restored Victorian mansion which became a funeral home and the last stop for famed outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd.
Lunch will take place at the Spread Eagle Tavern in Hanoverton, followed by a tour of the historic Hanover House and historic brick row featuring several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Then it's off to Guilford Lake for a pontoon boat ride, followed by a trip to Leetonia and a tour of the historic Charles Nelson Schmick house which features "marble fireplaces, stained and leaded glass windows, a tower, port chochiere with spindles and a wrap-around front porch."
From there, the bus travels to the Salem area for a trip to White House Fruit Farm Market, a trolley ride in Salem which will include a stop at Hope Cemetery, a Salem Historical Society Tour and then light tea with the Presidents' Wives at the Smucker House.
Some of the other places included in the various tours offered by the Golden Triangle include the Glamorgan Castle in Alliance, the Sprucevale ghost town, Lock 24, Salem Haunted & Historical walking tour or trolley tour, Rogers haunted house, the Cherry Valley coke ovens in Leetonia, Lisbon Cemetery Chapel, Das Dutch Cupboard Shop, Steel Trolley Diner in Lisbon, Catalpa Grove Farm Market in Columbiana, Mark's Landing at Guilford Lake, Naomi's Amish Quilt Shop, Ricky's English Pub in Salem and many other locations.
