Public invited to rummage sale at First United Methodist Church
SALEM - The public is invited to a rummage sale at the First United Methodist Church, 244 S. Broadway Ave. The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Rock-a-thon, Family Carnival Day planned at Masonic Temple
SALEM - The public is invited to two fundraisers, a Rock-a-thon and Family Carnival Day, to be held at the Salem Masonic Temple, 788 E. State St.
The Rock-a-thon begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the temple and will be held, rain or shine.
Also planned is a Family Carnival Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 17. Admission is $5 per person (maximum $20) and includes food, games, clowns, a calliope, face painting and fire truck rides. Children 5 and under are admitted free of charge.
Proceeds collected during both events will be given to District 13 Charities Order of Eastern Star.
Heroes and Halos Program hosting Operation Prom Dress
NEW WATERFORD - The Heroes and Halos Student Ambassador Program is hosting Operation Prom Dress from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the East Fairfield United Methodist Church, 45675 state Route 558.
Prom and homecoming dresses, along with suits, dress shirts, ties and dress pants will be donated to people who wish to attend the Kings and Queens Ball but don't have the finances to purchase the outfits themselves. The Kings and Queens Ball will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 27 in the government building at the Columbiana County Fair.
People who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have special needs and/or disabilities and have a developmental age of 5-18 years old are invited to the ball.
Mahoning County Board of Health offering rabies vaccination
BELOIT - The Mahoning County District Board of Health is offering a rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats, and ferrets from 2 to 4 p.m. May 17 at Beloit Village Fire Department, 17893 Fifth St.
Rabies vaccination for all dogs, cats, and ferrets over 3 months of age is required in Mahoning County.
Cost is $6 per shot. Pet owners must have their pets on a leash, in a cage, or inside a pillowcase. No appointment is necessary for the clinic.
This clinic is sponsored by the Mahoning County District Board of Health in partnership with Lisa Kurtz, D.M.V. and the East Park Veterinary Clinic of Columbiana.
'Ryan and Friends' will perform May 18 at First Friends Church
SALEM - "Ryan and Friends" will perform live at 7 p.m. May 18 at the First Friends on Jennings Avenue.
Ryan Bomgardner is a full-time ventriloquist and comedian and has performed hundreds of shows all over the world. A love offering will collected at the end of the show.
United Local Community Ed sponsoring yard sale June 7
HANOVERTON - The United Local Community Education Department is sponsoring a community yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 7 in the junior high gym.

Spring concerts scheduled at United Local High School
HANOVERTON - Spring concerts will be held at United Local High School.
The High School Choir Concert begins at 7 p.m. Friday. Performing groups will be Mixed Chorus, Concert Choir and Flight Show Choir. The eight Concert Choir seniors will be honored.
The Junior High Choir Concert begins at 7 p.m. Monday featuring the Seventh Grade Choir, Eighth Grade Choir and Eighth Grade Show Choir Touch of Gold.
Admission is free to both concerts.
Peddler's Day will be held July 12-13 in Hanoverton
HANOVERTON - Peddler's Day will be held July 12 and 13 in Hanoverton featuring numerous vendors and a petting zoo. Hot dogs, drinks and chips will be offered free on Saturday. The traditional parade, hosted by Joe McKarns, begins at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Events on both days include a Civil War re-enactment, Chinese auction and a 50/50 drawing. The winner need not be present.
Sunday morning kicks off with a church service at the gazebo with music by The Dulcimers and singing by David Holland. A ghost walk begins at 8 p.m. July 11. For more information call 330-389-1421.
SHS Class of 2016 collecting shoes during KSU's FlashDash
SALEM - The Salem High School Class of 2016 will collect all the shoes from Kent State University's FlashDash 5K obstacle race on May 17 at the KSU campus at 2491 state Route 45 South.
Registration begins at 10 a.m. The FlashWalk starts at 11 a.m.; FlashDash waves at noon, 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m.; and Future FlashDash (ages 6-12) wave at 2 p.m.
There will be male and female prize categories for all ages. Register online at col.kent.edu/news/flashdash.
Anyone interested in donating at this time may drop off their shoes at the FlashDash. The class of 2016 has set a goal to collect 15,000 pairs of shoes. They only need 14,000 more.
Salem Memorial and Patriotic Association will meet Monday
SALEM - The Salem Memorial and Patriotic Association will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at AMVETS Post 45, 750 S. Broadway Ave. Final arrangements will be made for this year's Memorial Day activities.
Schedule announced for Salem Memorial Day events
SALEM - The Salem Memorial and Patriotic Association has announced plans for Salem's 150th Memorial Day activities to be held on May 26.
The day commences with a free breakfast at 8 a.m. at the Memorial Building at 785 E. State St. for all veterans and invited guests participating in the parade. The breakfast will be hosted by the Salem Patriotic Association.
A city-wide memorial service will be conducted at 9 a.m. on the Village Green, located at the southeast corner of Lincoln and State Street.
The line-up for the Memorial Day Parade is at 9:30 a.m. on South Broadway Avenue. The parade commences at 10 a.m. and will proceed from Broadway to State Street, Lincoln Avenue, to Hope Cemetery.
A formal ceremony will be conducted at the cemetery with full military honors at approximately 11 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the memorial service will be conducted at the Kent State University City Center at 230 N. Lincoln Ave.
All units that participated in the parade last year are registered for this year's parade. Any new units must call 330-332-9810 or e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org no later than May 13 in order to be scheduled in the Memorial Day parade.
Storybook Museum's tag sale scheduled today and Friday
SALEM The Salem Storybook Museum's tag sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday on the corner of South Lincoln Avenue and Columbia Street. Elaine Rousseau-Kothera and Robert Viencek are the co-chairmen for the event.
The sale was originally scheduled last week but canceled due to inclement weather.
"We are looking forward to our semi-annual sale. So far we've collected a nice assortment of goods. Our loyal customers keep coming back," said Rousseau-Kothera.
"If you have any good, clean, quality items to donate, please contact us," said Viencek. "We can use houseware items, hardware, holiday decorations, games, puzzles, toys, lamps, linens. We don't accept bicycles, televisions, clothes or shoes," he said.

Chicken and biscuit dinner set at Ellsworth Presbyterian
ELLSWORTH -A chicken and biscuit dinner will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. May 18 at the Ellsworth Presbyterian Church.
Cost is $8 for adults and $3.50 for children ages 4 to 11.
Dinner includes chicken and gravy over biscuits, mashed potatoes, vegetable, applesauce, dessert and beverage.
