The fire occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. March 15 and heavily damaged a multi-residential home. Salem city firefighters responded and called out the whole department, with mutual aid provided by the Perry Township Fire Department. No one was injured.
A press release from the State Fire Marshal's office said "investigators have evidence that points to arson" at the home at 654 E. Third St. in Salem. The investigation is being conducted by the State Fire Marshal in conjunction with Salem fire and police departments.
"Information from the public is crucial to solving these kinds of cases," State Fire Marshal Larry Flowers said in the press release. "Investigators want to hear from anyone who saw something out of the ordinary at or around the time of the fire or who may have heard someone speaking about the fire with an unusual level of interest or knowledge."
No details about the fire have been released regarding how it started.
State Fire Marshal spokesman Michael Duchesne said a fatal fire on South Lincoln Avenue last month remains under investigation, with the cause still undetermined, pending receipt of the coroner's report. David Andrew Schiller, 51, of 861 S. Lincoln Ave., died after the fire at the family residence on March 28.
