Plant exchange day is Saturday at park
SALEM - Plant Exchange Day will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the maintenance building at Waterworth Memorial Park. Participants are asked to bring in a labeled perennial for exchange.
Historical Society hosting spring meeting
COLUMBIANA - The Historical Society of Columbiana-Fairfield Township will host its spring quarterly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church on East Park Avenue.
Youngstown State University professor Regina Rees, known for her storytelling, will present "The True Story of Johnny Appleseed."
The board of trustees has named longtime member, Dr. Leonard S. Pritchard, as an honorary trustee. He will be recognized at this meeting. The public is invited.
In observance of May as Ohio Preservation Month, the society is suggesting donations to the Columbiana Community Foundation's "Historical Preservation Fund." This fund was established late last year by the Hum family. Donations can be mailed to 11 S. Main St., Columbiana, Ohio 44408.
Scouts, volunteers recognizing Earth Day
YOUNGSTOWN - More than 450 scouts and volunteers are expected to scour Mill Creek MetroParks on April 26 in recognition of Earth Day to remove winter buildup of litter and debris.
This year, 25 locations throughout the MetroParks will be visited by 25 different Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, Girl Scout troops and the Boy Scouts Order of the Arrow from Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, Girard, New Middletown, North Jackson, Poland, Struthers and Youngstown. The clean-up is co-sponsored by the Whispering Pines District of the Greater Western Reserve Council, Boy Scouts of America and Mill Creek MetroParks.
Coordinators will stop by the Ford Nature Education Center, 840 Old Furnace Road, Youngstown, to pick up supplies before 9 a.m. and then meet with their groups at various locations and work until noon, rain or shine.
Sponsorship of this event is in cooperation with the recycling division of the Mahoning County Green Team. They will provide garbage and recycling bags, gloves, grab-its, pencils, certificates, and car litter bags.
This event is also in conjunction with the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup, and America's leading companies and brands support the campaign. The Great American Clean-up's national sponsors include Dow, Glad Products Company, Lowe's, Phillips 66, Troy-Bilt Lawn and Garden Equipment and Waste Management.

Butler Township clean-up days scheduled
BUTLER TOWNSHIP - Clean-up days for the residents of Butler Township will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 1; 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 2; and 7:30 a.m. to noon May 3 at the township garage on Slater Road.
Assistance will be available for heavy items. Items not accepted are paint, paint cans, organic materials, household garbage or fuel tanks. Batteries will be accepted. Passenger and light truck tires will also be accepted but must be rimless and free of debris.
Ladies Auxiliary offering scholarship
SALEM - Applications for Ladies Auxiliary to B.P.O.E. #305 scholarships are now available at the Elks Lodge and from the counselors at Salem High School.
There will be one scholarship, available to any graduating senior whose father, mother or stepfather, stepmother is a member in good standing of the Salem Elks #305. This scholarship is separate from the men's scholarship program.

County Dems will serve The Banquet
SALEM - The Banquet in Salem will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building, 785 E. State St. Next week's sponsor is the Columbiana County Democrats.

Dale Shaffer Appreciation Day is today
SALEM - The Salem Historical Society will host Dale Shaffer Appreciation Day today,, which would have been his 85th birthday, with the placement of the marker of the Dale Shaffer Legacy Time Capsule dedicated in 2013. This event begins at 10 a.m. on the front lawn of the Dale Shaffer Research Library on Dale Shaffer Way.
The burial of the time capsule was not only to commemorate the life and contributions of Shaffer but share with future Salem citizens of the time period in which the capsule was buried when it will be reopened in 2063. Greenway Bike Trail clean-up is April 26
LISBON - The spring clean-up of the Greenway Bike Trail begins at 10 a.m. April 26. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, garbage bags, small hand tools such as bow saws, nippers, shovels and brooms when they meet at the Teagarden Road parking lot. Spring Toward a Cure dinner is April 27
GREENFORD - The Smokehouse restaurant at 7600 W. South Range Road will host the Spring Toward a Cure dinner and Chinese auction from 4 to 7 p.m. April 27. Pulled pork sliders, chicken, baked potato bar, green beans and cole slaw will be served.
Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. A portion of the proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Boardman through team Faith, Hope and Love.
