SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Donald Leroy Witherstine, 65, died at 6:35 a.m. Wednesday at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 29, 1948, in Youngstown, he was the son of Walter S. and Helen R. (Cheese) Witherstine.
Mr. Witherstine was a maintenance supervisor for Aldi stores in South Carolina. He was also a fishing guide and captain. While living in Ohio, he farmed on the Firestone Farms. He was a member of Lake Mount Church of Christ in Rogers and Westview Christian Church in Spartanburg. He served in the Marine Corps during Vietnam, participating in over 60 military operations.
Survivors include his wife, the former Carolyn Cusick Simmons, whom he married Jan. 11, 1988; a daughter, Elizabeth (Matthew) Polley of Martinsville, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Deborah (Damion) Brush of Moore, S.C.; three sons, Kevin (Kelley) Witherstine and Spencer Witherstine of Prosper, Texas, and Don Witherstine of Greenville, S.C.; two stepsons, Mark Simmons of Columbiana and Keith (Tiffin) Simmons of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; four sisters, Mildred Elswick-Bowain of North Lake Wales, Fla., Rita Bergner of Houston, Texas, Rosemarie McGuire of Canfield and Marjorie Mead of Columbiana; two brothers, Edward Witherstine of Birmingham, Ala., and Leroy (Glenda) Witherstine of Salem; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Diana.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Lake Mount Church of Christ with Darrel Hall, evangelist, officiating. Burial will follow in Columbiana Cemetery where military honors will be accorded.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home in Columbiana and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
