LEETONIA- Police discovered two runaway teens in a Columbia Street home Thursday afternoon after three days of investigation.
Officers took custody of Sydney Durbin, who will turn 15 on March 21, and 16-year-old Daniel Haschak at 1:30 p.m. after a tip led police to the home, where the couple was hiding in a bedroom closet on the second floor. They were charged with running away and transported to the Tobin Center.
According to Police Chief John Soldano, the two teens were reported as runaways Monday night after not returning home from school. Two 15-year-olds also ran away with the couple, but turned themselves in that night. Warrants were issued for Sydney and Daniel at that time, Soldano said.
Police followed up on every lead, investing "many, many hours into the investigation," according to Soldano, who said further charges may be pending due to possible criminal activity that occurred while the two teens were on the run.
Soldano also explained that his department will conduct a thorough investigation on where the two teens were during their flight, looking at anybody who may have harbored or helped the couple. Additional charges could result from that investigation, he said.
