SALEM - Lena F. Scullion, 99, of Salem, died at 10:40 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014, at The Courtyard at Lexington.
She was born Feb. 5, 1915, in Rochester, Pa., daughter of the late Walter L. and Elizabeth (Hoke) Vansickle.
Lena was a 1933 graduate of Salem High School and a graduate of St. John's School of Nursing in Cleveland. Before her retirement in 1981, she had been employed as a registered nurse at the Salem City Hospital and previously at the Salem Clinic and St. John's Hospital in Cleveland. She was a member of the Women's Democrat Club, Salem Senior Citizens, Salem Retirees, L.C.B.A. and Salem Florence Nightingale Nursing Association. She was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church and served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Flight Corps nurse.
Her first husband, Major Richard Lawrence, preceded her in death. Her second husband, Edward R. Scullion, whom she married June 14, 1947, preceded her in death July 4, 1975. Two sons, Edward R. Scullion Jr. and Richard Lawrence; two sisters, Harriett Alaback and Mary Elizabeth Vansickle; and a brother, Walter Vansickle, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include three daughters, Gretchen (Dr. Myron) Haas of Pottsville, Pa., Sharon Scullion of Youngstown and Mary Beth Dean of Salem; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at the St. Paul Catholic Church with military services provided by the Salem Honor Guard following the funeral mass. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery.
