SALEM - Lena E. Callahan, 95, of Salem, died at 3:58 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at her home.
She was born Aug. 6, 1918, in Lisbon, Ohio, a daughter of the late Tony and Mary (Vechione) Battalio.
Lena had worked at the Salem Community Hospital first as a cafeteria worker before becoming a ward secretary. She had previously worked in the cafeteria in both the junior and senior high schools. She was a very active long time member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and was former president of the Prospect School PTA.
She had a green thumb with flowers and could get flowers to grow when others couldn't. Lena enjoyed crocheting and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Clarence E. Callahan, whom she married Aug. 6, 1938, preceded her in death on Dec. 2, 1994.
Two sisters, Helen Smith and Rose Chini, and four brothers Tony, Thomas, Johnnie and Fred Battalio, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly J. Callahan of Dublin, Ohio; a son, Timothy E. (Mary) Callahan of Salem, Ohio; three grandchildren, Kerry (Brian) Colian, Shona Callahan and Geoffrey (Stacy) Callahan; four great-grandchildren, Lillian and Megan Daley, Delaney and Emeric Callahan; four sisters, Phyllis Garner of New Philadelphia, Ohio, Josephine Batcha of Boca Raton, Fla., Mary Marinelli of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Angeline Festi of Dover, Ohio; and a brother, Albert Battalio of New Philadelphia, Ohio.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Connie Sassanella officiating.
Calling hours will be held one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Burial will be at the Hope Cemetery in Salem.
