ROGERS - Village Council voted Monday to begin the process of relocating village hall to the street department garage as a way to save money.
Village hall is located in a former church, and Councilman Tom Chambers said the move would save on the heating bill, which was nearly $700 the previous month.
"I think that's killing us," Councilwoman Jayne Balmenti said of the heating bill.
Chamber said once they move, the church could be leased or sold, generating more money for the cash-strapped village to perhaps reinstate the police department.
He believes the garage is large enough to accommodate the move and that it would cost less than $1,500 for renovations to create offices for the mayor and the fiscal officer.
In other action at the meeting, Councilman Mike Hunt said he spoke with Village Solicitor Michelle Simonelli after she failed to show up at their January meeting. Fiscal Officer Dale Davis reported last month that Simonelli had taken another village solicitor position for a village council that meets the same night as Rogers. Davis said Simonelli told him to advise council to reschedule their meetings if they wanted to retain her services.
Hunt said Simonelli told him she has resigned, but council indicated they preferred something in writing.
"She really should send us a letter saying she resigned so it can be put into the minutes," said Councilwoman Marilyn Locke.
Council then voted to send Simonelli a letter asking she provide them with a resignation letter and return all village records and documents in her possession.
Finally, resident Bill Crawford reported he just purchased back five lots he once owned on College Street and would like to proceed with closing the section of the street from Eells Street to state Route 7.
Crawford said council actually voted to close the section at his request in 2002 but he never had it surveyed and replatted because of the expense. He intends to do it now that he has acquired the additional property.
Council said they had no problem with his request but preferred to wait until they were presented with a new plat map showing the correct property owners before taking any further action.
