Schiavoni files for re-election to state senate seat

LISBON - State Sen. Joe Schiavoni (D-Boardman) officially filed for re-election Friday at the Mahoning County Board of Elections.

Schiavoni was appointed to the 33rd District Senate seat in 2008, replacing John Boccieri (D-Alliance), who left the Senate after being elected to an Ohio congressional seat.

Serving both Columbiana and Mahoning counties, Schiavoni was re-elected in 2010 and is now seeking another full four-year term in the senate.

"Since starting in the Senate over five years ago, it has been an honor and a privilege to represent the Mahoning Valley everyday as a state senator," Schiavoni said in a press release announcing his candidacy. "I have worked hard to be accessible to those who have needed assistance and reasonable when addressing issues in Columbus in order to provide my constituents with the best representation possible."

Schiavoni notes while progress has been made in some of the areas of concern, such as creating jobs, improving the education and restoring neighborhoods, he believes there is still a lot of work to do.

"That is why I am asking for voters to instill their trust in me for another term," he added.

Schiavoni recently was elected minority leader by members of the Senate. His current term expires in December 2014.

Schiavoni and his wife Margaret, a nurse-anesthetist, reside in Boardman with their son, Louie. They are expecting a second child in May.
