Humane Society offers cold warning
SALEM -The Humane Society of Columbiana County is again reminding pet owners of winter weather advisory precautions. Frigid temperatures remain in the forecast and the danger to animals continues. Owners of outside animals are urged to bring them into the house, basement, garage or shed if possible. If unable to make accommodations for your pet to have indoor shelter, you must provide the animal with adequate housing, food and water. What is needed in this weather is boxes stuffed full of dry straw. A thick plastic or waterproof burlap flap over the door opening provides a windbreak. Pets also need double the food. During cold weather, it takes more energy to keep the core of the body warm. Fresh, unfrozen water must be available. Owners must make several trips outside if the animal does not have a heated bowl. Agricultural life also need additional calories to maintain warmth, unfrozen water and at least a windbreak.
If you need assistance with straw call the Animal Resource Complex in Salem at 330-332-8622. To report animal cruelty or neglect call the Humane Hotline at 330-831-2613. When calling in a concern, leave street address, city and reason for calling. Failure to provide this information may result in a delay or inability to respond to the concern.
