Crown Theater presenting free movie

SRMC hosting open house this weekend

SALEM - Salem Regional Medical Center will host two open house events this weekend for the public to tour the new private patient room tower. Saturday features family day with children's activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday for the tower dedication and time capsule burial at 2 p.m. Events are free and include self-guided tours, informational displays and refreshments. Guests are invited to have their photo taken for a special mosaic to commemorate the dedication of the tower.

Breakfast buffet is Saturday at Masonic Bldg.

SALEM-The public is invited to a breakfast buffet from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Masonic Building, 788 E. State St. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and free for children under 2. The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail and beverages. The building is equipped with a handicapped accessible elevator. Proceeds will be directed to the Salem Masonic Building Fund.

County Academic Challenge is Saturday

COLUMBIANA - The Columbiana County Educational Service Center's County Varsity Academic Challenge competition is slated from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Columbiana High School. For the 15th consecutive year, the CCESC will bring together Columbiana County high schools to compete in this day-long tournament, with one team emerging as county champion. That team will represent Columbiana County at the regional academic competition on April 12 at Cloverleaf High School in Lodi. The state tournament is May 3 St. Charles Preparatory School.

County conservationists will meet

LEETONIA - The Columbiana County Federation of Conservation Clubs' monthly meeting begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Leetonia Sportsman's Club. Final plans will be made for the annual dinner. All CCFCC meetings are open to the public. For more information contact Tom Butch at 330-337-8444.

Medicaid sign-up assistance offered

LISBON - Help in signing up for Medicaid assistance is available from Family Recovery Center. Appointments are being scheduled from 3 to 8 p.m. Feb. 5 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 6 at 966 N. Driver education planned at Beaver Local

LISBON - AAA Driver Education classes at Beaver Local High School start Feb. 10. All area students are eligible to attend including home-schooled students. To register or for more information 330-532-2878.

Tree trimming work on SR 170 postponed

CALCUTTA - Due to the frigid forecast for next week, tree trimming work on state Route 170 north of Calcutta in Columbiana County is being postponed again. Weather permitting, officials are hopeful to begin this work on Feb. 3.

ODOT's Columbiana County crew will be using a "SkyTrim" unit for canopy removal and right of way clearing and maintenance between Township Road 1036 and 1032. State Route 170 will be closed during daytime hours between 8:15 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, for this work expected to take about three weeks. No official detour will be posted. Motorists should plan ahead to avoid delays.

Cabin Fever Fest planned at Mill Creek

YOUNGSTOWN - Mill Creek MetroParks' Police and Recreation Departments' Cabin Fever Fest begins at noon Feb. 1 at Wick Recreation Area, 1861 McCollum Road. Admission is free. Outdoor winter games, activities and sledding on Sled Hill will take place throughout the event. Inside the Warming House, the chili cook-off and children's crafts begin at noon. The public can taste the chili and vote for spiciest, most colorful and overall best. A snow sculpting competition outside runs from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Judging for the cook-off begins at 1:30 p.m. followed by snow sculpture judging.

Also starting at noon inside the Warming House, the MetroParks Police Department will offer a child identification program. Children can receive a free, individual ChildPrint ID Kit with fingerprinting and other safety features to take home.

LISBON The health insurance enrollment deadline is March 31. Area residents who need help obtaining health insurance before the March 31 deadline through the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) or the state of Ohio's Medicaid Expansion Program can find it at Community Action Agency of Columbiana County Health Centers.

Certified application counselors are available to provide information and free in-person enrollment assistance. They will help residents determine what coverage is available to them and what tax credits they may qualify for.

Counselors are at the East Liverpool Health Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at the Lisbon Health Center Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Appointments may be made by calling the Lisbon Health Center at 330-424-5686 or East Liverpool Health Center at 330-386-7777.
