LISBON - A Lisbon area woman was taken to Salem Regional Medical Center Thursday after her car went off the right side of Saltwell Road.
Lisbon Police officer Joe McElroy said it appears the woman was having a medical issue before the GMC Yukon went off the road and down an embankment into some trees.
The woman was not breathing when a KLG ambulance arrived to transport her to the hospital, McElroy said, adding she had already been transported before his arrival.
That a medical issue is a potential cause was evidenced through the tire tracks in the snow, which did not show any signs of brake use, he explained.
The woman was the only occupant of the car and her condition was not known as of Thursday evening.
McElroy would not disclose her identity at that time, although he said she is about 40 years old.
The Yukon was towed from the embankment by Baker Towing and the Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
Police Detective Shar Daub and another Lisbon officer also responded. The accident occurred around 5 p.m. opposite Dickey Drive and police and fire officials were still investigating more than an hour later.
Traffic was slowed during that time as firefighters directed traffic one lane at a time.
