Leetonia Library showing 'The Big Sleep'

LEETONIA- The movie "The Big Sleep" will be shown at 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Leetonia Community Public Library after it was original showing was canceled due to severe weather. "Dark Passage," also starring Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, will be shown at 2 p.m. the following Tuesday, Jan. 21.

The family movie "Despicable Me 2" will be shown at 1 p.m. on Jan. 25.

Salem Eagles serving haystack breakfast

SALEM -The public is invited to a haystack breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Salem Eagles Club, 1884 N. Ellsworth Ave. Cost is $5 per meal.

Blood pressure screenings offered at library

COLUMBIANA - Free blood pressure screenings will be available from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 14 in the Mowen Room at the Columbiana Public Library, 332 N. Middle St. No registration is required for the screenings to be conducted by Cindy Mitchell of the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association (SAVNA).

Karen Ullom will use the Accu-Cut machine along with card stock to show patrons how to make an original Valentine's Day card with a personal touch from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30. Registration is required in person or by calling 330-482-5509.

United Local will host financial aid meeting

HANOVERTON - United Local High School will hold a financial aid meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 15 in the high school library. A representative from the financial aid office at the University of Mount Union will review sources of financial aid and give instructions on how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Stitches in Time Group will meet Jan. 15

SALEM - The first get-together of the Stitches in Time Group will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 15 in the Quaker Room at the Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St.

Informal meetings are open to adults, and also children 12 and older when accompanied by an adult. Light refreshments will be available. There is no cost or registration. For more information call the library at 330-332-0042.

'Fly-by' carryout dinner will be sold Jan. 16

SALEM - A "fly-by" carryout dinner will be sold from 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 16 at the First Friends Church on Jennings Avenue.

The meal includes glazed ham loaf, cheesy potatoes, seasoned green beans, roll and homemade cake. Cost is $8 each. Reservations in advance may be made by calling the church office at 330-332-0001.

'Benefit for Destiney' scheduled Jan. 19

SALEM - The "Benefit for Destiney" will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 19 at Hunt Club Lanes. Destiney is the daughter of Duston and Sara Smith-Houchins and a student at Buckeye Elementary.

She was diagnosed with Vesicoureteral Reflux and Bowel and Bladder Disorder, and was receiving weekly treatments at Akron Childrens Hospital until October when she started having a form of seizures.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 4-10 and includes two hours of bowling, shoe rental and food. There will also be a Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle.

Tickets are available by calling 330-423-8875 or 330-423-7192, at the door or in advance at Hunt Club Lanes. Donations will be accepted at the "Benefit for Destiney" account at Huntington Bank.

WW II, Korean War vet will speak

CANFIELD - Ernest Stadvec, a World War II and Korean veteran, will speak on his experiences in both wars when the Mahoning Valley World War II Heritage Society meets at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at Ala Carte Catering on Lisbon St.

Stadvec is a native of Akron, and, after lying about his age at both 16 and 17 for short training programs, he was able to enlist in 1943 as a pilot in the 20th Air Force.

He completed 31 missions over Iwo Jima and Manchuria before the end of World War II and was called back again in the Korean War. He has held various aviation jobs since the end of his military service.

Breakfast planned at Salem Masonic Lodge

SALEM-A public breakfast buffet will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Jan. 25 at the Salem Masonic Building, 788 E. State St. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and free for children under 2.

The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail, orange juice, coffee and tea.

The building is equipped with a handicapped accessible elevator. Proceeds will be directed to the Salem Masonic Building Fund.

Crime Watch meeting scheduled Jan. 28

NORTH LIMA - The Beaver Township Police Crime Watch meeting begins at 7 p.m. Jan. 28 in the activity center at Shepherd of the Valley, 9111 Sharrott Road. The guest speaker is Trish Ahlswede, residential care coordinator RN at Shepherd of the Valley.

Columbiana Chamber hosting biz breakfast

COLUMBIANA - The Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce will host a business breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 31 at Das Dutch Haus.

The event topic is "Social Media for Your Business" featuring Dr. Bruce Keilor, Youngstown State University professor of marketing and international business.

Dr. Keilor also serves as the YSU department of marketing chairperson and is the director for the Williamson Center for International Business.

He will speak on the different types of social media and the benefits of each for business.

Cost is $10 for chamber members and $15 for non-members. Reservations are required at 330-482-3822.

Friends of the Banquet sponsoring meal

SALEM The Banquet in Salem will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building, 785 E. State St.

Next week's sponsor is Friends of the Banquet.

The menu offers chicken noodle soup, sloppy joes, cheesy potatoes, baked beans, cole slaw, fresh vegetables and fruit, and ice cream sundaes.

Steak fry is Saturday at American Legion

SEBRING - A choice of Porterhouse, strip and rib eye steaks are offered at the monthly steak fry from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Sebring American Legion.
