GREENFORD- Green Township Fire Chief Todd Baird Tuesday night asked trustees to consider hiring a grant writer.
Baird told the trustees that he has applied for a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant of $148,000 for a brush truck, at a local cost of $7,400, but that the application has become more tedious and difficult to navigate, with over 70 pages of rules as well as a grants administrator. He noted that Beaver Township uses a grant writer.
Regarding the grant for which he applied, Baird said priority is given to rural departments for brush trucks and that the grants are awarded starting in February.
Additionally Baird reported that the department received $27,672 in additional funds in 2014 including grants and community donations.
In other business, the trustees approved Zach Baird, Calla Road, as a probationary firefighter and agreed to reimburse elected officials and township employees up to $650 per month for additional costs incurred in health insurance coverage after cutting coverage at a previous meeting.
Also at the meeting, Recycling Coordinator Janet Shaffer reported that the recycling budget will be cut 41 percent to $5,310 and there will be no tire drive in the township in 2014.
Zoning Officer Bill Pitts said the Zoning Board will address sign restrictions in the zoning code at its next meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 at the community building. The trustees also explained that the message board erected at the center of Greenford is for township use, with no personal messages permitted. Messages from community groups, schools and churches will be allowed.
Trustees elected to wait and see how the chip and seal road resurfacing from last summer holds up through the winter before making a decision on which roads to resurface in 2014. Trustee Dave Slagle had expressed intent to bid out the projects in January.
At the trustees' reorganizational meeting Tuesday night, Slagle was elected chairman and Dave Blevins appointed acting EMS coordinator for the retiring Debra Rogers. Meetings will remain at 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month.
