COLUMBIANA - Members of American Legion Post #290 of Columbiana have joined with hundreds of other American Legion Post in Ohio to help make this Christmas memorable for hospitalized veterans.
Members are collecting funds for the annual American Legion of Ohio "Gifts for The Yanks Who Give" program.
Benjamin Firestone American Legion Post 290's "Gift for Yanks" party is at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9. The public is invited to attend for food and fellowship. The post assumes all costs of the party. Donations go to the "Gifts for Yanks" program. The post is located along 44408 state Route 14, Columbiana.
This is the 66th consecutive year the Ohio American Legion is pooling funds from posts for gifts and activities benefiting veterans in Ohio's state hospitals, VA Medical Centers, outpatient clinics, and the Ohio Veteran's Homes in Sandusky and Georgetown. The program's name is the same as the one initiated by comedian Eddie Cantor during World War II.
"This effort is not limited to members of the Legion", said Commander Richard Simpson. "We welcome contributions from individuals and business establishments to help finance the statewide program annually costing over $300,000. Checks may be made payable to "Gifts for Yanks" and sent to Simpson at P.O. Box 143 Columbiana, OH 44408."
Besides distributing individual gifts to veteran patients, the Ohio American Legion is also contributing to each of the five gift shops operated at the VA hospitals, whereby patients may select gifts to send to their families.
Televisions, radios and other electronic equipment for the VA hospitals and the Ohio Veterans' Homes are also being provided again this year from the program funds. The fund will also spend over $100,000 on other than Christmas activities for VA and state hospital patients, as well as provide year round recreation opportunities.
