SALEM - Not a half-hour after announcing a writing contest on social media, three submissions were received at Mane Perfection.
Terri Rasul, owner of Mane Perfection in Salem, put the word out Thursday that her store will award $200 for the best essay about the person that has inspired the writer the most.
"Past or present," Rasul said.
The contest is open to anyone, any age, Rasul explained.
"I just want everyone to have fun with it. I want people to acknowledge their loved ones."
There will not be second or third places awards, "because I want that one person to win that money," she said.
Mane Perfection expanded earlier this year into a beauty supplier with the addition of a new showroom and is located at 2368 E State St., Suite D, in the Salem Plaza.
Merchandise includes wigs, purses, jewelry, wedding attire and jewelry, hair extensions, clip extensions, make-up, tiaras, hair dryer, curling irons, sunglasses, along with the store's own line of Mane Perfection hair and beauty products.
Rasul's inspiration for the writing contest "goes back to my sister Taghreed," she said, "who died of pancreatic cancer on Jan. 2."
Rasul said the essay can be about "your parent, sibling, teacher, boss, coach, friend, dentist, doctor, babysitter, ecetera. This is very easy to win, explain in detail why that person has inspired you."
Length doesn't matter and writers can include photos.
"However long they want," she said, "be creative."
Judging is expected to be performed by residents from a nearby nursing facility who love to read.
Essays must be turned in by Dec. 12 and they can be messaged or emailed to email@example.com or mailed to Mane Perfection 2368 east state street Salem, OH 44460.
Entrants must be willing to allow Rasul to post it in Facebook or otherwise use it for publication.
The winner will be called on Dec. 16th and announced on Facebook.
