LISBON - Robert L. Harmony, 45, East Fourth Street, Salem, who faces an aggravated murder charge, appeared before Columbiana County Municipal Court Judge Mark Frost Thursday morning by video arraignment from the county jail.

Bond was set at $1 million cash or surety. A preliminary hearing was set for Nov. 21.

Harmony requested and was appointed a public defender. When asked if he works, Harmony told Frost he is a disabled veteran and receives Veterans Benefits and Supplemental Security Income totaling about $736 per month, as well as about $127 in food stamps.

Harmony also requested Frost consider releasing his wallet and cell phone to his ex-wife, whom he called Kimberly Jane.

Frost said he would allow Harmony to make that request through his public defender, but noted it was not up to him to make that decision.

At one point, Assistant County Prosecutor Don Humphrey Jr. relayed that Harmony is already facing a felony domestic violence charge, which has not proceeded due to the alleged victim in the case, Harmony's wife, Christiane Harmony, returning home to Germany. According to court documents, they were married in June and he was indicted in July.

Humphrey also made a motion to amend the charge from a first-degree felony, to an unclassified aggravated murder charge, which is punishable by an undetermined 15 years to life with a possible $15,000 fine.

Court documents note Salem police responded to a 911 call at 2:35 a.m. Nov. 13, when someone reported a man appeared to be stabbed in the 400 block of South Broadway. Gerrod S. Lanzendorfer was found in the roadway with visible trauma from an edged weapon at various locations on his body.

Harmony reportedly also contacted 911, admitted he "stabbed someone" and walked to the Salem Police Department. He reportedly had a black Gerber folding knife in his possession.
