ALLIANCE - For years Van Tires operated out of the building at 456 East State Street.
Since the early 1970s, according to Kirk Wineman, who bought the business years later and has operated it as Discount Tire Center.
Wineman moves his tires to the slogan, "Four tires in 40 minutes or less" and he deals with 12 tire warehouses that allow him to "get just about anything."
He calls that a perk of being in the business for so long.
Wineman was born and Massillon and has lived all his life in the area. He is a 1980 graduate of Chalker High School in Trumbull County. It is Southington today.
One thing he says right away is that he enjoys his job.
"I really do, I have good people working for me ... an awesome crew."
There are six full and part-time employees and Discount Tire is going six days a week Wineman said.
He has had some difficulty finding younger employees willing to work a six-day week, he said.
"They're happy with 30 to 40 hours," he said.
No big deal. He has an "awesome crew."
"We sell nearly any brand you want," he said, "and all we do is tires ... mechanical work is where the money is but all we do is tires."
He explained that some dealers use tires to get people in the door "and then sell them exhausts or something else ... people are so used to that, selling you stuff you don't need."
Discount Tire Center sells mostly Kelly Springfield tires, Wineman said, along with Goodyear, Cooper and Toyo.
"I'm all about dollar value and quality and through out the years Kelly Springfield has given me the most bang for the buck."
Since the late 1990s he's also sold a lot of Toyo tires.
"Toyo are very nice quality tires for the money you spend," he said adding that Hercules, made by Cooper, are popular with pickup owners.
"I don't sell the cheapest you can get because I'm the the one who has to listen to the complaints.
Conversely, "You can spend a lot and still get a terrible tire. You don't always get what you pay for, it seems," he said.
Discount Tire gets a lot of repeat business and the business is "pretty much" walk-in customers, but Wineman recommends calling ahead to check and make sure the tires are available.
"It's best to call," he said and see if something's in stock.
"But a lot of the stuff we can have that day or the next day. I have a lot at my fingertips because of the warehouses. It gives me the ability to get anything."
There has been business from the shale oil and gas-related industry in the area.
"Oh, certainly," he said, "they've been buying tires from us ... we sold a lot in 2012 to those guys."
All tires come with free rotation, flat repairs and lifetime balancing, Wineman said and along with new or used tires, Discount Tire Center sells batteries.
