LEETONIA- The school board Thursday night appointed a member to its empty seat.
The board unanimously named Leetonia alumnus Richard Hendricks to the seat vacated when board president Doug Jones resigned last month due to moving out of the district. A 1994 graduate, Hendricks owns a paint shop in Niles.
"I'd like to help carry the excellent direction that [Superintendent Rob Mehno] and the board has started," he said of his appointment after the meeting. "You look at it and see the district isn't in financial trouble, hasn't had to put a levy on in a while."
Hendricks and his wife, Marci, have two children, Andrew in second grade and Rylee in preschool.
According to board President Kurt Jennings, the board interviewed nine candidates, then narrowed the list to four, spending more than 30 minutes speaking to each one.
"All of them were quite dedicated and enthused," he said. "Quite honestly we could have thrown a dart at any of the four names, really all nine, and done quite well for the district."
Boardmember Michael Rulli noted the overwhelming response from the community to fill the seat.
"It shows the passion alive in the district, that our district is growing," he said.
The term expires Dec. 31, 2015.
In other business the board named Jennings board president and John Rydarowicz vice president.
The board also hired Terry May Jr. as a five-hour custodian, Joann Morris as a six and a quarter-hour cook, Karen Griggy as a four and a half-hour cook and Shannon Morrow as a three and half-hour cook; and approved as Deanne Nocera and Pam McIlduff as volunteers for cross country and fall sports, respectively. The board also approved supplemental coaching contracts for Bill Altenhof as weightroom assistant and Kyle Keeler as boys seventh-grade basketball.
Also at the meeting, the board approved an increase of 25 cents in adult lunch prices to $2.50 and accepted a donation of $125 from the Italian American Club for the Football Supplemental Fund. The board also accepted donations from the Leetonia American Legion of $250 for football T-shirts, $200 for eighth-grade cheerleaders warm-ups and $200 for golf T-shirts; and from the Washingtonville VFW of $250 for the Football Supplemental Fund and $100 for the Golf Team Supplemental Fund.
The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26 in Room 20 of the K-12 campus.
