United Junior High orientation

scheduled Thursday evening

HANOVERTON- The United Junior High will host a seventh-grade orientation at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Auditorium to welcome all seventh graders to the junior high. Schedules and school locks will be distributed.

Schedules for students in eighth through 12th grades will be available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday in the high school office.

A freshman laptop orientation will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 22 in the high school Cafeteria for all ninth-graders and their parents.

An open house for student in grades seven through 12 will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 27. Students are invited to come and meet their teachers and receive supply lists.

Back to School dance

and pool party set in Sebring

SEBRING- A Back to School dance and pool party for Sebring student kindergarten through eighth grade will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Sebring pool and tennis courts. Swimming will be open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade and the dance for students in sixth through eighth grade. Admission cost is one non-perishable food item. Refreshments will be available for an additional cost. Students in kindergarten through second grade must be accompanied by a parent, but all parents are welcome to stay and meet the teachers. All students must be picked up by a parent. If inclement weather the party will be moved to the F.A. Community Center.

Jam Fest 2013 planned

Saturday at Columbiana Legion

COLUMBIANA- Jam Fest 2013, featuring over 30 local and national musicians, is scheduled for 1 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the American Legion Benjamin Firestone Post 290, 44403 state Route 14. Tickets are $25 with dinner or $10 without. Dinner will be served beginning at 6 p.m. The menu consists of slow spit roasted beef, cheese potatoes, baked beans, macaroni salad and rolls. Cheese will be cooked by Rick and Brad Burbick of "Double B Cuisine." There will also be beer specials, pop and water. Tickets will be available at the door. For information call 330-482-9657. All Proceeds will be donated to various veterans organizations.

East Palestine High School

Band painting paw prints

EAST PALESTINE- The East Palestine High School Band will be once again be painting paw prints for residents and businesses who would like to have them. Cost is $10 for new paws and $5 to have current paws repainted. All money raised goes directly to support the EPHS band. Contact Donna Thornton at 330-718-0823 to get your name on the list. Painting of the paw prints will begin Friday and continue through the weekend.

Community Center offers

new session of L.A.P.S.

SALEM- The Salem Community Center is announcing another session of L.A.P.S. (Learning to Accelerate your Potential for Swimming).

The primary purpose of L.A.P.S. is to bridge the gap between swim lessons and competitive swimming strokes with an emphasis on promoting wellness and fitness through the sport of swimming. Participants can look forward to building aerobic capacity and muscular endurance, improving strokes and fitness levels, building competitive skills, individualized goals based on skill level and friendly competition through optional time trials. Three age groups are available: Tiger Sharks (7 to 12), Great Whites (13 to 19), and adults.

L.A.P.S. will run Sept 9 through Dec. 19 with two sessions a week. Tiger Sharks will practice from 5 to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Great Whites from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and adults from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Crime Watch to meet Aug. 27

BEAVER TOWNSHIP- The Beaver Township Police Crime Watch will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at Shepherd of the Valley, 9111 Sharrott Road. Guest speaker will be Brent Kovacs from the Ohio Department of Transportation to discuss the overall operations of ODOT and projects upcoming and currently underway. Local crime statistics will also be discussed. The meeting is open to the public.

Bank One retirees to meet for lunch Aug. 20 At Ricky's Pub

SALEM- Bank One retirees and former employees will meet for lunch at noon Aug. 20 at Ricky's English Pub.

Ohio Organizing Collaborative to discuss fracking at library

SALEM - The Ohio Organizing Collaborative will hold a meeting to discuss fracking in the Salem Public Library, Quaker Room, at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
