South Range to seek 4.8-mill levy

BEAVER TWP. - South Range Local residents will be deciding on a 4.8-mill new money levy in November.

The school board Monday night agreed to submit to the board of elections the 10-year levy that will generate $857,500 annually. The district last passed a new money levy in 2004.

The district, which has already seen drastic cost-saving measures such as introducing open enrollment, adjusting school hours to coincide with single-route busing and employee concessions, is projected to enter an operating deficit during fiscal year 2015.

In other business the board renewed for the 2013-2014 school year its food service management contract agreement with Nutrition Inc., which operated the cafeteria last school year.

Schools Superintendent Dennis Dunham said that although patronage needs to be increased, the administration is pleased with the service and quality of the company.

"We're working to get the numbers back up...be where we need to be so that the district isn't losing money," he said.

In the agreement the district will pay Nutrition Inc. $1.9819 for each reimbursable meal or equivalent served.

The board also granted permission for the high school cross country team to attend a team camp Aug. 12 through 15 at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Peninsula, Ohio.

Additionally the board approved supplemental coaching contracts for Nathan Toy, middle school football; Mark Plunkett, assistant middle school football; Jeff Remish, assistant middle school football; Brian Crumbacher, assistant middle school football; and Laurie Sauerwein, middle school volleyball.

The board also accepted the resignation of David Purins as assistant high school cross country coach; and approved as unpaid volunteer coaches Jim Hanek, assistant golf, and Mitchell Thornton, assistant cross country.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 in the K-12 campus Band Room.
