GOSHEN TOWNSHIP- The township trustees Monday night hosted Mahoning County Engineer Pat Ginnetti to speak about changes in his department since taking over in January.
Ginnetti, who has previously worked for the city of Columbus and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, said he is making a conscious effort to develop shared services in the county, such as salt storage facilities for county, state and township road departments and striping services that could save townships 60 percent, that will make the department more efficient and cost effective. He said he has requested a performance audit to identify deficiencies and told the trustees he hopes to rebuild relationships between the county and townships to not only make road maintenance more efficient, but make the roads safer for residents.
"Safety is number one," he said. "If a road is bad, it needs fixed. It doesn't matter where it's at (in the county)."
Ginnetti highlighted Garfield and Calla roads in the township, noting that they both need addressed soon. He said he is working with Columbiana County Engineer Bert Dawson to resurrect Mahoning County's chip and seal program and that Dawson has agreed to resurface one road (likely Garfield or Calla) this year free of charge to demonstrate how he has been able to secure funding for projects in Columbiana County.
"If you do it the right way with the right materials, it works," he said, citing the success of state Route 534.

In other business the trustees approved up to $135,000 for a new road department truck with plow and spreader from Myers Equipment Corp. in Canfield. The trustees also accepted the resignation of part-time police officer Michael Wirkner effective July 7 and the promoted Det. Karl Balasz to corporal effective July 14.
Also at the meeting, Fiscal Officer Tom Knoedler reported that the township budget is on track through the first half of the year, with all income and expenses at roughly the 50 percent mark and the only tight areas being natural gas costs and gasoline usage at the road garage and recycling center.
The next regular trustees meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Administration Building.
