SALEM - Edward J. Glista, 84, of Salem, Ohio, passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Northside Hospital in Youngstown due to complications from surgery.
Born in Redstone Township, Pa., on July 5, 1928, he was the son of Joseph and Mary (Toczek) Glista, who had emigrated from Poland.
Though he grew up in the Canfield area, his adult life was spent in Salem. He was drafted into the Army and served in the Korean War as a Sergeant First-Class and member of the Army Motor Pool. After he was honorably discharged, he worked in the shipping and packing department at the Eljer Company of Salem for 47 years. Ed was also a devoted member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Salem.
Ed is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce (Stryffler) Glista, whom he married in 1953; his daughter Shelley (Scott) Weingart of Salem, his sister, Nellie Martinovich of Berlin Center; and his sister Helen Faciana of Sun City, Ariz. He is also survived by his two grandchildren, Carson and Valerie Weingart.
His son, Jim preceded him in death in 1995, as well as his brothers Andrew, Walter, John and Joseph, and sister Agnes.
Ed was a member of the Elks in Salem, the Slovak Club, and VFW. He enjoyed riding bikes with his grandchildren at Berlin Lake, attending the Canfield Fair, listening to polka bands at the SNPJ, watching his grandchildren sing and play the piano, and vacationing at Cedar Point with his family every summer.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, July 8, 2013, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home.
A funeral Mass will be held directly after the calling hours at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church in Salem, with burial at Highland Memorial Park at 12:30 p.m. Following the service at the cemetery, a luncheon will be held at the Elks Lodge on State Street in Salem.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 1249 N. Ellsworth Ave., Salem, Ohio 44460.
