SALEM - Helen Louise Brown, 97, of Salem, died at 9:45 a.m. Friday, June 21, 2013 at home with her family by her side.
She was born Jan. 27, 1916 in Portageville, Miss., a daughter of the late Lemuel and Charity (Ashford)Akers.
She attended Salem First Friends Church. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker who enjoyed cooking and being with her family.
Her husband, Riley M. "Brownie" Brown, whom she married July 15, 1931, preceded her in death July 30, 1995. A son, Harold Brown; two daughters, Phyllis Lease and Wahnettia Johnston; granddaughter, Paula Roman; three brothers, Jack Akers, Paul Akers and James Akers; three sisters, Virginia Baker, Imogene Christy and Maxine Lloyd; and sons-in-law Fred McNeal and George Sturgill also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Robert J. Brown of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters, Alma Sturgill of Phoenix, Ruth McNeal of Salem, Helen (Ray) Esterly of Salem and Barbara (Paul) Lippiatt of Salem; two brothers, Donald Akers of Rockford, Ill., and Bill (Ruby) Akers of Hayti, Miss.; sons-in-law, Donald Lease and John Johnston; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and eight great great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 24, 2013 at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Jason Vickery officiating. Calling hours will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Park.
