Lisbon will retain drug-testing policy

LISBON - The school district's new drug-testing policy was extended for another year when the Lisbon school board met this week.

Superintendent Don Thompson said the policy, which went into effect at the start of the 2012-13 school year, ended up costing the district about $6,000, considerably less than the $10,000 set aside to cover the expense.

The policy required drug testing for any students participating in sports and other extra-curricular activities.

In other action, the board agreed to reinstate the position of maintenance supervisor, starting Aug. 1, one month after it canceled a maintenance service contract with Facility Maintenance Services.

The board had contracted with Facility Maintenance Services last July for $70,120 to replace long-time maintenance man Jeff Tice, who had retired, as a way to save money.

Thompson anticipated another school district would join them in sharing the contract but that did not occur, leaving the district to shoulder the entire cost.

He recommended they return to the practice of employing a maintenance man as a district employee. "This is the route I recommend we head back to," Thompson said.

The board:

- Agreed for a fourth consecutive year to eliminate the $25 student instructional fee charged elementary and middle school students to cover miscellaneous expenses.

The waiver costs the district about $8,000, which is an expense the board is willing to absorb as long as it can afford to do so.

- Rehired the following people as head varsity coaches for the fall season, at the same pay rate: Jim Tsilimos, football; Cara Nardy, volleyball; Jason Thompson, golf; and Kathy Randolph, cross country.

- Renewed the contracts of Steve Stewart as director of federal programs/technology, for $30,805, and Dave Brookes as special education director, for $30,306.

Each works 100 days per year.

- Renewed the contract with the Nutrition Group to operate the cafeteria, with the company estimating a profit of $19,000 to be returned to the district.

- Approved a 10 cent increase for breakfast, lunch and milk prices to comply with federal reimbursement requirements.

Breakfast will cost 95 cents, with lunches costing $2.10 at the elementary school and $2.35 at the high school.

The reduced breakfast cost is 40 cents and 50 cents for lunch. Milk will cost 50 cents.

- Renewed the contract for insurance coverage through Holloway Insurance. The cost is expected to increase but the company is negotiating with the carrier to reduce the expense.

- Renewed the contract for trash pick-up with J & J Refuse for $578 per month.

The board's next meeting is 5 p.m. July 9.
