Chesapeake Exploration was moving Nomac Rig 43 onto the Mangus drilling site Tuesday with more of the rig expected today. Chesapeake owns the oil and gas rights to the property in the 37000 block of Butcher Road and is licensed for six drill holes. The well is the seventh in Salem Township and is the closest yet to Salem city limits. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, there are five drilled wells and two permitted wells in the township. Chesapeake owns the rights to six of the wells while Hilcorp Energy owns the rights to the Salem-Grubbs 1H well. Nomac Rig 34 is being moved from Carroll County and, according to Chesapeake Energy's drilling rig report it is one of two Nomac drilling rigs currently in Columbiana County. It will be rigging up in the next couple of days and the target depth for the horizontal well is 13,783 feet. A truck is pictured delivering a part of the well late Wednesday while a flag car assists with traffic control at the entrance to the drill site. (Salem News photo by Larry Shields)
