BELOIT- The West Branch Local school board Monday night held a six-hour executive session to hear the appeal of a teacher whose contract has been non-renewed.

The board will have 10 days to decide whether to uphold or overturn the decision to non-renew the contract of High School English teacher Tracie McFerren, who the board declined to offer a continuing contract in April. No action was taken at the meeting, which extended past midnight, according to schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Weingart.

"The board wanted to be thoughtful (about its decision)," he said. "[The board members] decided to adjourn and come back after having the opportunity to digest all the information."

Mike Helm, president of the West Branch Education Association, and Gary Carlisle, a labor relations consultant with the Ohio Education Association, joined McFerren in the meeting. Weingart and a school board attorney also sat in.

McFerren had been with the district for five years, serving the past two on a limited contract after becoming eligible for a continuing contract.
