Righetti and his father, Mark, presented the idea of an autocross to the Super Cruise committee and followed through on each step. Autocrosses are timed speed and skill events over a defined course in which drivers race one car at a time around safety cones on a short enclosed course with emphasis on safe competition.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the NEO Valley of the Sports Car Club of America's will conduct the event with the first car on the track at 11 a.m. Registration will be $20 for SCCA members and $25 for non-members. Dominic Righetti said there will be mandatory drivers meeting at 10:30 a.m.
Details regarding the course layout are being worked out and each driver will gets four to six runs. Half of the participants will be running the course while the other half will be cone workers, putting them back where they need to go if they got knocked down and they take turns. Also all loose items in the vehicle must be removed or securely fastened including floor mats and each driver must have a Snell 95 approves helmet or newer.
"A few will be available at the event for shared use," Righetti said, adding that one passenger is allowed per run and must also wear a helmet
Participants can share cars but must register separately. Prohibited are motorcycles or high center of gravity vehicles (SUVs, lifted trucks, etc.) open exhausts and nitrous oxide. Minors must have a valid driver's license and have both parents sign the minor release and age affidavit from www.scca.com/downloads and have both documents notarized.
The autocross will run rain or shine but not under lightning conditions.
The other event scheduled for Sunday, June 23 is the Bricker Automotive (NAPA) Show 'n Shine.
Salem Expert Tire previously sponsored the show 'n shine but withdrew sponsorship this year since its advertising budget for the 2013 event includes bringing "Big Foot" to the Super Cruise. The Show 'n Shine is set for Sunday at the city lot across from Timberlanes from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Ball caps and T-shirts for the Super Cruise are available at city hall for $10 each.
