Legacy of Daniel Howell

Hise featured at meeting

SALEM - Judi Allio and George W.S. Hays will present a Powerpoint presentation on the Legacy of Daniel Howell Hise at the Salem Historical Society's membership meeting at 7 p.m. June 11 in the meeting room of the Dale Shaffer Research Library, 239 S. Lundy Ave. The public is invited.

Hise kept a 32-year daily diary during the 1800s. That diary was transcribed by Allio, under the direction of Hays, former director of Salem Public Library. Hise was an avid abolitionist who put his life on the line by opening his Salem home to fugitive slaves on their flight to freedom. Hise was also the force behind the raising of Coppock's Monument in Historic Hope Cemetery. Copies of the Hise Journal are available on microfilm, book form, CD and DVD in the society's gift shop. board to meet June 18

SALEM - The Salem Senior Citizens board meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. June 18 at the Memorial Building.

Also planned this month is a picnic at noon July 26 at the Memorial Building. Food will be provided. Those attending are asked to bring prizes for bingo games.

AAA Driving School sets Salem summer classes

SALEM - AAA Driving School announces summer class from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. June 19, 20, 21, 24, 25 and 26 at Salem High School. Cost is $300 or $280 for AAA members. Registration is available in the high school office or by calling 330-277-0052.

Hospice of the Valley's

children's grief camp set

VILLA MARIA, Pa. - Hospice of the Valley's children's grief camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 19 and 20 and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 21 on the campus of Villa Maria.

The day camp is open to children ages 8 to 15 who have experienced the recent death of a loved one. The goal of camp is to teach children coping skills related to loss as well as interact with those who have had similar experiences. All activities are designed and led by trained professionals working in the area of grief. The camp is free of charge and open to anyone in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. Meals and snacks are provided daily.

Public breakfast buffet set

at Salem Masonic Building

SALEM - A public breakfast buffet will be served from 7:30 to 10 a.m. June 22 at the Salem Masonic Building, 788 E. State St.

Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children under age 10 and free for children under 2. The menu offers pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade sausage gravy, biscuits, homefries, toast, fruit cocktail, orange juice, coffee and tea.

East Liverpool Landlord

Education Class offered

EAST LIVERPOOL - An East Liverpool Landlord Education Class will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. July 23 at Trinity Church, 110 Maine Blvd. This free class is sponsored by East Liverpool Fair Housing and Columbiana Metropolitan Housing Authority. It provides valuable tips for rental property owners, managers, real estate agents and others who deal with rental issues. Registration is requested at 800-850-0467.

Salem Library's Adult Book Discussion Group to meet

SALEM - Salem Public Library's Adult Book Discussion Group will discuss "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley from 7 to 8 p.m. June 25 in the library's Quaker Room.

Public knitting day will be

observed in Sebring Saturday

SEBRING - A first-time "Worldwide Knit in Public Day" will be held at the Schrenkengost Park gazebo from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday.

Sponsored by Heidi & Lana at 222 N. 15th St., it is free and open to the public, store owner Margaret Craig said, adding there will be refreshments. "People can sit and knit," she said.
