Barbara Susanna Masters Ashcraft

SALEM - Barbara Susanna Masters Ashcraft, 79, of 903 Elberon Ave., Salem, Ohio, passed away at 11:50 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Essex of Salem II following a period of failing health due to calciphylaxis.

She was born in Fairmont, W.Va., on Dec. 23, 1933, a daughter of the late Ralph W. Masters Sr. and Alma Seggie Masters.

On Feb. 5, 1950, she married William L. Ashcraft who preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 2012.

Barbara resided in Fairmont, W.Va., most of her life. She was employed by the Union Mission of Fairmont, serving in several positions until her retirement in 1992, when she moved to Salem, Ohio.

Barbara was a member of TOPS #1598 Salem, Ohio and served as the club weight recorder for many years. Until her husband became ill, Mrs. Ashcraft was affectionately known as the "Candy Lady" volunteer at the Salem Wesleyan Academy; previously she had tutored academy students in math. In recent years, Barbara volunteered with Tiny Hugs 'n Stitches, crocheting baby afghans for mothers in need. She was also an amateur radio operator-KC8HDB; an accomplishment that brought much pride to her grandson, Jonathan, KC8CPW. Barbara was a member of the Merrifield Memorial AWM Church, Fairmont, W.Va., and attended the Connecting Point Chapel in Beloit, Ohio.

Barbara is survived by a daughter Susann C. Thawley and her husband, the Rev. Roger L. Thawley of Salem, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jonathan David Thawley of Knoxville, Tenn., Regina Faith Thawley of Salem, Ohio, and Roanna Joy Thawley of Salem, Ohio; and a great-granddaughter, Olivia Susann Thawley of Knoxville, Tenn. She is also survived by one brother, Ralph (Bonnie Jean) Wallace Masters Jr. of Fairmont, W.Va.; and one sister, Mary O. Lemasters of Fairmont, W.Va.

She was preceded in death her parents, her husband; two brothers Warren Robert Masters Sr. and Charles H. Masters; and one sister, Betty Jean Efaw.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Connecting Point, Chapel, 12275 Beloit Snodes Road, Beloit, Ohio, where a Celebration of Life will follow at 4 p.m. with the Rev. James Keaton officiating.

On Monday, June 3, the family will receive friends at the Merrifield Memorial AWM Church, 1265 Bell Run Road, Fairmont, W.Va., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. where another Celebration of Life will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ronald Yoder officiating.

The interment will be at the Marion County Grandview Memorial Gardens, Fairmont, W.Va.

Barbara was loved much and is greatly missed by her family and friends. However, there is hope that one day they will be reunited in Heaven as Barbara left a wonderful testimony of a changed life because of Jesus Christ her Lord and Savior.
