Garage sale planned at Counseling Center
LISBON - The annual garage sale, sponsored by the Columbiana County Recovery Initiative to benefit the children's Christmas voucher fund, will be held in the multi-purpose room at the Columbiana County Counseling Center. Food drive set in Damascus May 25
DAMASCUS -The Damascus Ruritan Club's "Nourish Our Community," a bi-annual non-perishable food drive, is slated from 9 a.m. to noon May 25 at the Damascus Post Office parking lot. The food will be distributed to area food pantries. Monetary gifts will also be accepted. Checks may be made out to the Damascus Ruritan Food Drive.
The club's bi-annual rabies clinic will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. May 25 at the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department's meeting room on state Route 534. All dogs must be on leashes, all cats in cages. Cost is $6. Other vaccines will also be available. The veterinarian is Dr. Jack Zines. Proceeds will be used toward the club's youth programs.
Tickets on sale for wine festival
COLUMBIANA - Tickets are now on sale for the first Columbiana Wine Festival to be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 15 on the greens of Whispering Pines Village Golf Course.
Pre-sale admission bands are available weekdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from the Columbiana Area Tourism Bureau, one of the sponsors of the event, at the bureau's office at 328 N. Main St., for a $20 donation per person.
Each admission will provide 10 tasting tickets for the featured Ohio licensed wineries which include the Mastropietro and Myrddin Wineries from Berlin Center, Luva Bella from Lowellville and Old Firehouse Winery from Geneva-on-the-Lake.
Musical entertainment, food vendors, and local food, wine and craft artisans will also be a part of the festival, as well as a pastry and beverage bistro sponsored by the bureau and an amateur wine-making contest.
Additional pre-sale locations during business hours include Whispering Pines Senior Living Community, Sitler the Printer, Paul Antone's Restaurant, Carman's Tobacco and More, Vivian's Antiques, the Columbiana Diner and the Wine Connection in Columbiana; Gene's Drive-Thru, Mason's Steak House and Ricky's English Pub in Salem; Chalet Premier in North Lima; and the Steel Trolley Diner in Lisbon.
A donation of $25 will be requested at the gate on the day of the wine tasting event. Proceeds will be used by the tourism bureau to develop future events.

Salem 1954 breakfast planned
SALEM - The Salem High School Class of 1954 will meet for breakfast at 9 a.m. June 30 at the Salem Hills Golf and Country Club.
Healthy cooking class offered
SALEM - Area residents are invited to participate in a free, six-week cooking class, "Start Cooking Healthy," designed to help families with limited resources learn how to make healthy and affordable meals, using common foods. Participants will learn how to select nutritious and low-cost ingredients and prepare them in ways that provide the best nourishment for their families.
Course instructors from Salem Community Hospital will teach cooking skills, practical nutrition information, food label reading and food budgeting strategies for families. At the end of each class, participants will receive groceries to practice making the recipes they've learned that day.
The classes will be held on Thursdays from 5-7 p.m., beginning May 23-June 27, in the kitchen at St. Paul School, 925 E. State St. The six-week program is sponsored by the United Way Services of Northern Columbiana County, Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley and Salem Community Hospital.
The total cost for the program is $10/participant, with $5 returned at the end of the program if the participant attends all six classes. Those completing the six-week program will also be eligible for a $50 drawing. Note that class size is limited to 26 people, and all participants must pre-register. Free activities for participants' children in kindergarten through sixth grade will be provided by the Lake-to-River Girl Scouts during each class session.
