Warriors win baseball, softball games

BASEBALL

West Branch 14, Minerva 8

MINERVA - As West Branch picked up a 14-8 win over Minerva on Thursday, one of the Warriors made his mark in state history.

Brenden Wells became the 14th player in Ohio High School Athletic Association history to have six hits in a game. Wells went 6-for-6 with a double and two RBIs for West Branch.

The stellar performance marks another illustrious milestone passed in Wells' career at West Branch and is headed to Marshall University. He finishes his career with 186 total hits, which is fourth most all time in Ohio. Wells also stole four bases in the game, bringing his total stolen bases to 102.

Elsewhere for the Warriors, Jake Smith went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs. Jakob Clayotn went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while Dylan Greenawalt added another RBI double for West Branch.

West Branch improves to 12-15 with the win, while the Lions falls to 3-22.

SOFTBALL

West Branch 12, Mooney 2

BELOIT - Bailey McElwain collected six RBIs and Kaylie Lewis ran her pitching record to 12-1 during West Branch's 12-2 five inning win over Youngstown Mooney in a Division II sectional final Thursday.

The score was tied 2-2 until West Branch scored six runs in the third inning and four in the fourth to pull away.

West Branch improves to 21-5 overall and will meet the Poland-Lakeview winner in a district semifinal at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Alliance High School.

McElwain had three hits, including a home run, and Cheyenne Miller went 3-for-3 to lead the Warriors. Catie Metzgar had two hits and an RBI and Kaylie Lewis added two hits.

Reagan Rito, Jessica Richards, Jeni Stewart, Allie Garrett and Sarah Weber contributed singles.

For Mooney, Shannon Saadey doubled. She also was the losing pitcher as she finished the season with an 8-11 mark.

Mooney's record drops to 8-17.

West Branch will play a regular-season game at Alliance today.
