Drummond won’t run for President of Council

May 9, 2013
By MARY ANN GREIER - Staff Writer (mgreier@salemnews.net) , Salem News

SALEM - City Councilman Rick Drummond announced Wednesday he's withdrawing his bid to run for President of Council, attributing the reason to work responsibilities.

Drummond had filed to seek the Republican nomination for council president earlier this year and would have been up against fellow Councilman K. Bret Apple, who filed as a Democrat, in the fall.

When asked what happens now, he said it was his understanding that there would be no candidate for the Republicans since the filing deadline is past. He said he'll continue to serve as a councilman representing the Third Ward.

Drummond works for Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in the IT or information technology area and said at the present time, he's not sure he would be able to devote the time he should to serving as president if he were elected.

He had no further comment. No Independents filed for the council president seat, so unless a candidate files as a write-in later this summer for the fall ballot, Apple may be the next council president. Current Council President Mickey Cope Weaver chose not to run again.

Drummond is in the second year of a four-year term on council.

Before announcing the withdrawal, he commented on an experience he shared recently with city Treasurer Bob Tullis and city Auditor Betty Brothers when all three of them attended a six-hour Feel The Heat program in Columbus with city Fire Chief Jeff Hughes.

All three donned full fire gear and participated in drills to get an idea of what firefighters go through.

He said it's definitely a young person's job and reinforced his appreciation for the people who do that job. Tullis also reported on the experience, explaining some of the activities they participated in, such as going into a dark room to rescue a dummy, using thermal imaging equipment and climbing ladders.
