Beth Dickey-Thompson announced her candidacy for Salem City Treasurer Monday, filing as an Independent candidate for the position being vacated at the end of the year by current city Treasurer Bob Tullis.
"I am seeking the position of the city treasurer because I feel it is my opportunity to give back to a city and community that has supported and comforted my family and myself over the years," she said in a press release. "I am a very detailed individual with strong resources in city government."
"I feel that I can do this job because of being a fast learner and able to retain information, my strong ethics, and also great critical-thinking skills. I work well with a large cross-section of people and I have a real desire to serve the city of Salem," she said.
Dickey-Thompson is the daughter of longtime former city Auditor Fran Dickey, who served the city for 22 years, and Bill Dickey, the former owner of the Penn Grill. Her sister-in-law, Cyndy Baronzzi Dickey, is currently the Fourth Ward City Councilwoman.
According to her press release, Dickey-Thompson has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the American Intercontinental University as well as an associate's degree in business management. She graduated from Salem High School in 1986 with a focus on Accounting/Clerical studies.
She is employed by Visiting Angels of Salem. Her past employment includes accounting/clerical secretary for Sell Welding, inventory control for The Speaker Shop in North Lima and corrections officer for Columbiana County in Ohio, Escambia County in Alabama and Miller County in Missouri.
Dickey-Thompson has been a resident of Salem all of her life except for six years when she lived in Brewton, Alabama. That's where she met her husband, Billy. They've been married for 10 years.
She's a member of the First United Methodist Church of Salem where she was involved with the choir. She was also involved with the United Quilt Guild in the past.
In the fall, she'll be facing fellow Independent candidate John Conrad in the treasurer's race. No Democrat or Republican candidates filed for the position.
