Quaker City Motorsports Park owner Norm Fox is set for his third year of running the famed drag strip three miles north of Salem on state Route 165. The track is 56-years-old and after setting new asphalt down track last year, Fox installed a new 330-foot concrete starting line that was just finished in time for today’s opening. Lasers were used to level it out and Fox said there was two-inch “belly” in it for years. (Salem News photo by Larry Shields)

Fox said a new static aluminum-type main entrance sign will be installed along with new LED lighting in places.

A large portion of asphalt was also laid on the pit side just east of the main entrance.

Plans also call for relocating the grandstands from the spectator (west) side to the pit side. Fox said a mound is being built on which those stands will be set on and back just a little from the wall for safety.

Upcoming events include a Nostalgia Classic on May 26; a big bucks box/no box bonanza June 8-9; the Steel Valley Super Nats on June 21-23 and the Night of Lightning & Thunder on July 27. Fox said the track picked up the Curt George Memorial Weekend Mopar race from a Pittsburgh race track and that event will be held Aug. 17-18.

Regular track events include race days on Saturdays, Fridays with with test and tunes and street night gates on Thursdays, along with test and tunes.

The top class payouts are $800 to win and the runner-ups are $350 with $100 for the semis and $15 round money after a second-round win.
